Shakespeare and Choir "Stuff"

Hello!

Here are your FINAL REMINDERS before Parent Night happening NEXT FRIDAY, January 7th!

NUMBER ONE:
In order to earn entrance to the Ascension Party later this month, here are the Seven Ascension Qualifications that each student needs to complete by January 6th-- NO EXCEPTIONS:

1. Watch, read, or listen to AT LEAST FIVE Shakespeare Plays in Shakespearean text. (Sorry, no materials that are simply based on the Bard's plays.)
2. Complete all the assignment sheets in the Student Y.E.S. Manual.
3. Read the assigned play, and discuss it each week in class. (If more than 3 class discussions are missed, please speak with the mentor about discussing the play with your parents.)
4. Help plan the “Twelfth Night Extravaganza” to be held in January. (We will do this together on the last week of class!)
5. Give a Class Presentation on an assigned Elizabethan Subject.
6. Recite the assigned soliloquy or set-piece from memory. (This can be done in front of the entire class, or privately with your Y.E.S. Mentor.)
7. Write a summary of Macbeth in your own words. (The length of the paper is up to the student!)
NUMBER TWO:
Our Parent Night, called "The Twelfth Night Extravaganza", will be happening on the evening of Friday January 7th from 7pm until 9pm. It will be held in Gilbert. I will give you the address in class next Thursday. This is a rewarding, fun night for all the students to show their families what they've been learning all semester. Remember that we will recite the soliloquy from Macbeth that night, and I will be calling on a couple of students to read their wonderful papers.

NUMBER THREE:
At the following links are the Rehearsal Schedule for the Shakespeare Play, the Production Contract (due at auditions on the second day of class), and the list of Parent Volunteer Positions. At least one parent from each family needs to help in one or more of these areas. Let me know ASAP where you'd be willing to help! (Please let me know if you have any questions!)

CHOIR MEMBERS: We will be performing "Scarborough Fair" and "The Call" at the beginning and end of the evening. Please wear a white shirt and dark pants for boys or a dark, plain skirt for girls. Make sure you have all the words memorized!

I'm excited to see you all again next week!!! :-)

Love,
Mrs. Keppner

This Week: November 4th!

Dear Shakespeare Students and Parents,

Last week was so much fun! We had a hilarious Banter Battle, a hands-on demonstration about "Elizabethan Weapons and Warfare" by Brennan, and we held a coronation for our first member of royalty, Lady Elizabeth M.! And DUKE passed off the soliloquy with flying colors-- and so can YOU!!!

We've now finished Act III of Macbeth, and I think we can all see what happens when a person lets their ambition for power overcome the principles they know are right.

  • This week's presentation will be given by Rebecca and will be on "Myths, Stories and Legends of Elizabethan Times".
  • The reading assignment is Act IV, Scenes 1-2
  • The writing assignment is "Fathers have the role of family protector. How has your own father protected your family?"
  • Plays: How many plays have YOU read/watched/listened to??? I challenge you to rack up more plays this week! :-)
  • Memorizing: How are you coming on Macbeth's soliloquy? Be sure to work on memorizing this week!
Here are the statistics for our class's Rank Elevation:
  • Elizabeth is now an official "LADY"!!!
  • Bonny and Rebecca are "Damsels" and are each just five plays away from becoming "Ladies" themselves!
  • Carli is only two plays away from becoming a "Damsel", and Brennan is only two plays from attaining the rank of "Squire".
  • Morganne is three plays away from becoming a "Damsel."
  • Duke only needs four plays to reach the rank of "Squire."
  • Jessica and Alyssa are now "Maids" and only need 5 plays to reach the rank of "Damsel."
  • Lliam needs one more play to become a "Page", and Lauren only four more plays to become a "Maid"!
WAY TO GO, SHAKESPEAREANS!!! You can get there!!! :-)

See you Thursday...

Love,
Mrs. K.

October 21, 2010 Class

Her Ladyship, Miss Elizabeth

Dear Shakespeare Students,

We had a great class Thursday! The warm-ups were really fun and Carli gave us an entertaining and funny presentation on "Death and Burial in Renaissance Times". Her handouts (and her cute costume!) were quite a hit! Elizabeth passed off her soliloquy yesterday, AND was the first to advance to the rank of  "Ladyship"!!! YAY ELIZABETH!!! :-)

ONE THING:
I forgot to practice the soliloquy with everyone! Oops! So, please be sure to work on it on your own this week.

Here are your assignments for next week:

Reading Assignment: Act III, Scenes 4-6
Writing Assignment:
Does getting what you want always make you happy? Why or why not?
Plays: How many plays have YOU read/watched/listened to??? I challenge you to rack up more plays this week! :-)
Memorizing: How are you coming on Macbeth's soliloquy? Be sure to work on memorizing this week!!!

See you next Thursday! :-)

Love,
Mrs. K.

Off To A Great Start!

Are you enjoying Macbeth? I know I am! :-) Before class this week, I encourage you to bring any questions or comments on this week's reading to class. Our discussions have been pretty sedate so far! LOL!

Remember that the reading assignment is Act I, Scenes 5 through 7.

And the writing assignment is to write a paper discussing "When is ambition good? When is it bad? Explain."

We're excited to see Elizabeth's presentation on "Superstitions" this week. What a great way to begin the month of October! ;-)

How many plays have you read/watched/listened to? You still have some time to fit in a few more!

See ya Thursday! :-)
